Letter to claim compensation for a delayed flight

Claim for compensation for a delay of 3 hours or more using your rights under European Community Regulation EC 261/2004. You can also use it to claim a refund of certain expenses, such as for refreshments and overnight accommodation (and you can do this where the delay is just 2 hours, for a flight of up to 1,500 km).

You can use this letter after having checked-in for a flight on:

  • an inbound flight that arrived at an EU airport on a flight operated by an EU airline, or
  • an outbound flight that departed from an EU airport on a flight operated by any airline.

In this context, 'EU' includes the UK until 31 December 2020 (when the Brexit transition period ends).

The letter applies to delays to scheduled flights, flights bought directly from a charter airline, and can include flights chartered through a package holiday. It includes options to claim for delays that occurred because your flight was diverted to another airport or because you missed your connecting flight.

Some airlines may have particular claims procedure or form that you must use - in these cases, it may still be possible to use this letter to support your claim.
